Singapore – An unexpected adventure

“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” – Proverbs 16:9
We had about a week left in Malaysia, thinking that we would spend it serving at a church in Kuala Lumpur. After a night in Kuala Lumpur we were surprised by our leaders with an announcement that we were about to have a travel challenge. All 19 of us were going to travel on scooters to an unknown (to most of us) location.
The idea was to go on a retreat adventure with Jesus. God is so multifaceted and you experience something totally different of Him when you go on an adventure with complete dependence on Him.
We packed our small backpacks and tents, not yet sure where we would sleep.

At the end of the first day we arrived at a beautiful beach scene. We started chatting to the locals and Lizé spoke to a Muslim couple that told us we could camp on the beach. The couple however came back to us and told us that they had a house with six rooms that we could stay in for a few days.

The next morning we had some time with the Lord in quiet time but decided we needed to head on from there. We were well on our way when we found out that we are actually going to Singapore. We had made a connection with someone through one of the churches in Malaysia and a lady in Singapore was waiting for us to serve us a wonderful meal. We pressed on and had a number of hurdles the last day on the scooters but through a lot of prayer we made it to Singapore.

Once in Singapore, we were stunned by the architecture and struck by the difference compared to Malaysia. We rushed to the lady, Mama GH, who had taken the day off of work to serve us a restaurant worthy seafood meal. She was also paying for all of us to stay in a hostel for 3 nights.

She treated us like her children in our interactions with her when we had two other meals with her as well. She has a mother’s heart, which she especially wanted to extend towards all the team members who left home and family for the first time. Some people are just hard to describe, she carried something in her that spoke about walking real close to Jesus. We were secretly wondering if she might be an angel. Nevertheless, we thanked the Lord for His abundant favour, protection and provision towards us, gifting us with an unforgettable experience.
And as we are carrying on with our journey, I think we have quickly realised that the places we are going to are as valuable as they are because of the people we meet and not merely because we get to have amazing experiences. After all, it is written:
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
– John 13:35

Until we write again, blessings
